My daughter has attended TCS since pre-K and is now in fourth grade. I have served on the school site council and interview panels for both principal and assistant principal positions. Tenderloin Community School offers a positive environment for all students, educationally and socially. As a community school it not only provides classroom education, but also a food bank, a dental clinic, after school clubs and support to help families connect with social services. There are monthly principal''s chats for parents/caregivers and regular parenting/health conversations. There are two family liaisons, one of whom is bilingual English/Spanish. I am aware of the "worrisome sign" of the school`s test scores, but they are not "caused" by the teachers, the students or the school environment. Below average standardized exam scores are not "contagious" but are the result of segregation and other complex social factors. Although the faculty and staff provide quality education to all of the students, the biggest challenges facing TCS are not academic issues. Rather, they are social and economic. More than half the students are English learners, many have experienced significant trauma, and almost all live in poverty. Like most public schools in California, TCS is underfunded. And this school does not have the luxury of affluence to provide hundreds of thousands of dollars to the PTA. The school does get significant financial support from the Bay Area Women''s and Children''s Center. BAWCC funds a second librarian, the technology program (including iPads, Chromebooks, and staff), structured activity time (offered instead of PE and recess as an effective means to reduce bullying), after school art, homework, cooking, tech, dance and newspaper/yearbook clubs, and the dental clinic. They also consistently advocate for the well-being of the community, both at school and beyond. Is Tenderloin Community School perfect? Of course not, because no school is. Yet it has been a great place for my daughter to learn and a wonderful community to be a part of.
